Many
hands make light work. Our experience has been that every person
involved with Bike4Peace is grateful to every other, and we're all
especially grateful to the organizers. There are so many details to
coordinate in a project of this scale. You can make a huge difference
with a few phone calls or e-mails, no matter where you live. Please start by reading through our itinerary
to see if you know people along the route you could call. Even if you
don't know anybody, you could help to introduce us by contacting people
who share your organizational affiliation or religion or just calling
the local bike shop. Communication is always a challenge. Riders can carry cell phones, which sometimes work, or check e-mail when the Internet is available, but we can always use help passing the word along to make sure everybody is on the same page. We don't want to organize or control anybody, just to share what others are thinking and doing. We want you to feel unity with a whole nation full of good people who are only a bike ride away. Does each host have the contact information of the hosts on either side? Are local cyclists lined up to guide the riders to their next location? Have potlucks and workshops been organized and publicized? Do you know others who might donate an item from our wish list? Do those who might continue to DC feel supported? Could we list you on our web site as the primary contact for your area? Press contacts are another vital piece of organizing. Our strategy is to get as many stories as possible in local outlets. Please feel free to cut and paste together a press release to send to your local newspaper, TV, and radio. Play up the local angle of Journey activities in your community. Call the day after they receive the release to schedule an interview preferably at the host's home. Please confirm scheduled interviews with the riders as soon as you're able. When stories run, please obtain copies for us and thank the journalists. Don't believe your involvement must end when the Journey leaves your town. You could provide the impetus to start another ride to DC on a more direct route or at a faster pace. Please take the initiative to build your own Bike4Peace and let us know what you're doing. We're building an annual continental critical mass ride to converge upon DC every Sept 22nd. Together we can build a peaceful world. |
